It changed its radio show name to coincide with the name change of its newspaper THE BEST OF TIMES on February 1, 2003. Factoids about the past 100 radio shows on “The Best of Times Radio Hour”: • It has been the only locally broadcast “live” radio talk show on the weekend. • It has been the highest listened to radio talk show on KEEL on the weekend according to independent radio listener surveys. • It is the only “live” radio talk show of its kind in the entire state of Louisiana which provides educational information for seniors, retirees, and family members, without any political or religious topics of discussion. • It is the only radio talk show with a companion monthly newspaper and internet website in Louisiana. • There have been 154 guests who have appeared on one of the radio shows to provide educational information on a variety of subjects and topics as well as to answer numerous questions from listeners. These guests provided information about 93 different topics involving legal, financial, healthcare, retirement, travel, crime prevention, scams, products, services, benefits, and events. • There have been two (2) of the 100 radio shows broadcasted in its entirety live at a remote location in front of an audience --- on April 12, 2003 at The Waterford at Shreveport and on October 11, 2003 at AmSouth Bank -Huntington Branch in west Shreveport. • There have been 389 listeners who have called into 100 radio shows to ask questions of the host or guests. (Note: There have been other listeners who have attempted to call into the show but could not get through as there are only two telephone call-in lines at KEEL studio.) • Since January 2002, there have been 21,672 visitors to The Best of Times’ website (www.thebestoftimesnews.com) to learn about the upcoming radio shows’ guests and topics. • Since the radio show inception, there have been 152,500 emails sent to persons informing them about the upcoming topic and guest of the radio shows. • There have been three (3) presenting sponsors of the radio show – McDaniel Financial for Seniors, Seniors’ Asset and Family Estate Planning (SAFE Planning), and Kilpatrick Life Insurance Company/Rose Neath Funeral Homes. • There have been a total of 1,320 public service announcements made during 100 radio shows to inform persons living in the ArkLaTex about upcoming events, activities, benefits, and programs which could benefit seniors, retirees, veterans, or others. • In addition to the radio show’s prime host and founder, Gary Calligas, who is also the publisher of THE BEST OF TIMES newspaper, there have been seven (7) co-hosts to assist in interviewing radio show guests – Ernie McDaniel, Fran Evans, Steve Rainey, Blake Rainey, Elaine Keith, Harold Palmer, and Andy Shehee. • There have been 93 educational topics discussed by guests on the 100 shows regarding Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security Program benefits, disability benefits, Veterans benefits, Estate Planning, Retirement Planning, Senior Health Insurance, Long Term Care Insurance, Credit advice for seniors, Elderly law issues, IRS filing assistance, retirement living options, assisted living facilities, nursing homes, home health care, hospice care, adult day care, osteoporosis, arthritis, scams affecting seniors, emergency room care, transportation services for seniors, geriatric medical issues, eye care, chiropractic care, Alzheimer’s Disease, wound care, critical care issues, disorders of the knee, dental care, mature driving courses, home infusion services, hearing loss and hearing aides, DME medical products an services, and NW Louisiana Senior Olympic games.
