2009 James Burton International Guitar Festival had many fun-filled events
August 31st, 2009

2009 James Burton International Guitar Festival had fun-filled events

All of the events of the 2009 James Burton International Guitar Festival were enjoyed by guitarists, fans, visitors, and music lovers.

At the “Birthday Bash” on Friday evening celebrating James Burton’s 70th birthday at the Festival Plaza, James Burton took time to autograph copies of the May 2009 issue of THE BEST OF TIMES, the issue which he was featured, for 500+ fans over 2 hours. Many persons got his autograph on this collector’s issue, but many waited in line to give James their special birthday cards and gifts to him.

On Saturday afternoon, guitarists from around the world journeyed to the Hirsch Coliseum at the Louisiana State Fair Grounds to be part of musical history to attempt to beat the Guinness World Record for the largest number of guitarists playing the same song.  The coliseum floor and side seats were full of all ages of guitarists enjoying jamming with internationally known guitarists on stage. Though the Guinness Record was not officially beat during this attempt due to the fact that the many who registered online where also at the last minute required to also register in person with the Guinness officials. However, there was a secondary attempt made to achieve the Guinness world record for the largest number of individual guitarists playing solo at a concert, so every guitarist at the Hirsch was asked to play for 5 seconds while film crews filmed each person. The decision on achieving this record will be announced at a later date. Though the crowd was disappointed that the record was not broken, many truly enjoyed playing in this event and meeting new guitar players from throughout the world.

During the event, the stage announcers mentioned that THE BEST OF TIMES would be awarding a special prize package to the “oldest guitar player” who participated in this Guinness record attempt and also will be featured in an upcoming issue of THE BEST OF TIMES. There were several guitarists over 70 years of age, but the winner of the oldest guitarist, at the age of a young 75 years, was Mr. Buddy Ramsey who traveled all the way from Emerson, Arkansas to be part of this event.

The Best of Times Radio Hour broadcasted a special historic LIVE radio show on AM 1130 KWKH, Home of the Legends, a GAP Broadcasting station but also streaming live on the internet at www.kwkhonline.com from 1:30pm to 3:00 pm  from the Hirsch Coliseum on that Saturday afternoon. Radio show host, Gary Calligas, had Frank Page, KWKH radio personality, and former Louisiana Hayride announcer on this special radio show.  Shreveport Mayor, Cedric Glover, stopped by with his guitar to be on the live radio show to thank James Burton and the many visitors to our city for these events. He also complimented the works and assistance that THE BEST OF TIMES had provided for seniors in the area. This radio show also broadcasted at 2:30 pm the live the Guinness record attempt for largest number the guitarists playing on stage and throughout the Hirsch Coliseum  the Elvis Song “That’s All right Mamma”.
