Locally produced movie "Ruffian" to air on ABC on June 9th at 8 pm
June 8th, 2007

Mark your calendars and set your DVR for locally produced film “Ruffian” airing on ABC (KTBS TV) this Saturday, June 9th @ 8 p.m. The film was shot here in Shreveport and Northwest Louisiana in 2006 and features Harrah’s Louisiana Downs in Bossier for many of the horse racing scenes and many locations in downtown Shreveport. It’s also airing on ESPN throughout the month and available on dvd everywhere on June 12th.

This movie stars Sam Shepard, Frank Whaley, Mat Greet, Mark Adam, Tyrone Shaw, Nicholas Pryor, Christina Belford, and Keith Flippen.

Gary Calligas, Radio show host of THE BEST OF TIMES RADIO HOUR, was an extra in this movie for two full days filmed in 2006 and hopefully, he might be in a couple of the scenes and one of them which takes place at a local bar (Noble Savage), where he had a small speaking part while at a table playing cards and watching the action of actors. These scenes might be in the final movie version, but could have been cut out.

Sam Shepard ("Don't Come Knocking," "Black Hawk Down") stars in the inspiring horse racing drama "Ruffian," the powerful and emotional true story of the racehorse hailed as the greatest thoroughbred filly of all time. Shepard plays trainer Frank Whitely, who guides this incredible filly's ascension into the public consciousness amid the backdrop of the '70s, a decade of equine superstars and Triple Crown winners. Ruffian's beauty and speed made her a memorable filly, but it was her match race with Kentucky Derby winner Foolish Pleasure that made her one of the beloved horses of all time. The movie, which was shot in Shreveport, LA in 2006, also stars acclaimed actor, writer and director Frank Whaley ("Pulp Fiction," "Born on the Fourth of July") as legendary sports writer Bill Nack. Famed Canadian film director Yves Simoneau ("The 4400," "44 Minutes" and "Nuremberg") helms this original production.
