In the coming weeks, website site visitors will be able to download the entire October 15th radio show to learn more about each of these 10 little known historical facts. The following is a summary of these: 1. Shreveport was once the capital of Louisiana 2. The first off shore oil well in the world was in Caddo Lake 3. The greatest collection of Victorian waterworks machinery is at McNeill Street Pumping Station in Shreveport. 4. Shreveport had a naval base during the Civil War. 5. Shreveport had a shipping building port during the Civil War era and built an ironclad and five submarines, sisters of the C.S.S. Hunley. 6. The first formal church service held in Shreveport was by Bishop (and General) Leonidas Polk. 7. Captain Henry Miller Shreve never lived in Shreveport. 8. Shreveport had the 2nd largest red light district in the U.S., the only larger being Storyville in New Orleans. 9. Shreveport was once the western most town in the U.S. – from 1835 to 1836 (City of Greenwood was founded in 1836.) This was true until Texas entered the Union. 10. The 3rd largest outbreak of Yellow Fever occurred in Shreveport in August and September 1873.
