Books for Troops -- donation of books or monetary contributions welcomed
August 13th, 2012

This campaign "Books for Troops" started back in late 2010 after a long time friends returned from Afghanistan.  For more details on how this all got started, please visit our website for the entire story:  www.thriftypeanut.com and click on the “Books For Troops” link.  In July 2011, The Thrifty Peanut Book partnered with Soldier’s Angels and shipped 18,000 books to troops in Iraq & Afghanistan.

In 2012,  they were asked by several of our library partners, as well as numerous customers if we would continue the "Books for Troops" campaign. This year, because of the large donations by several libraries, they have set a goal at a mind numbing 100,000 books!  However, this year they will be also accepting monetary donations as well as books.  The reason for this is because Soldier’s Angels noted that that it cost them an estimated $12,000 to ship the 18,000 books, so they cannot begin to imagine what it will cost them to ship 100,000 to the troops.

Currently, they have taken in 18,000 books, and still counting.  Longview Public Library has already made a large donation, and Shreve Memorial Library will be making a substantial donation (estimated to be approximately 2,500 books from them alone).  In early September, Marshall library will be making a large donation as well.  They have also received significant donations from St. Marks Episcopal Church (vacation bible school), as well as countless others that have brought their books into either of their stores.  Later in September, The Thrifty Peanut Book Store will be purchasing the remainders from the Muses of Centenary’s annual book sale, and those too will be donated to the campaign.

On the 20th of October, everyone is invited to meet at the storage facility, where the COSST(City of Shreveport Swim Team) will be assisting in loading an 18-wheeler with all of the books that have been collected.  Bossier City Mayor Walker will be in attendance. After the truck is loaded, they will be given a police escort through Bossier City & Shreveport on their way back to San Antonio, where the books will begin to be inserted into their care packages & shipped to troops deployed worldwide.

Anyone person or organization or business is welcome to donate books, or make a tax deductible donation at either of the Thrifty Peanut Books Stores listed below:
